Beach handball: Handball in the sand
Until the 1960s, handball was mostly played outside on the large field before indoor triumph began. For some years now, handball players have been drawn outside again: with beach handball, a variant of handball has been developed that is played in the sand and officially recognized by the DHB. Beach handball is played with fewer players (four outfield players plus goalkeeper) and a square goal area. In contrast to handball, trick throws like the Kempa or goals scored by a goalkeeper count twice. In addition, the two ten-minute halves are scored independently of each other: the team that won both halves wins. If there is a tie, there will be a shootout.
Beach handball combines all the classic athletic features of indoor handball with the flair of beach sports: spectacular trick throws, a fast game and a relaxed beach atmosphere characterize the sport. Like other beach sports, beach handball is often played in the form of tournaments.
What distinguishes a beach handball from a normal handball?
Since beach handball is played in the sand, beach handball has some features that distinguish it from normal handball. For example, no resin can be used in the sand, which is why the beach handball is also somewhat smaller for the right grip. It is 54 - 56 cm in circumference for men, and 50 - 52 cm in circumference for women. Thus, the men play a size 2 ball in beach handball, the women play a size 1 ball. Since it is not possible to bounce in the sand, but instead the ball may be rolled, the jumping properties of the ball are not so important. In contrast to handball, the beach handball ball consists of non-slip rubber (e.g. cellular rubber) and should therefore also be waterproof. The outer skin is soft and easy to grip.
