Rhythmic gymnastics with equipment: aesthetics meets acrobatics

Rhythmic gymnastics with equipment is an extremely feminine sport that demands maximum performance from the athletes. Accompanied by music, they perform exercises such as turns with and without hand tools, ropes, clubs or similar. During competitions, the flexible gymnasts compete individually or in groups on the competition area.

What is apparatus rhythmic gymnastics?

Dance movements and ballet elements are combined in this elegant sport. Acrobatics and the use of various hand devices such as hoops, ribbons or balls give it a very special touch.

What apparatus is used in rhythmic gymnastics?

  • Balls made of rubber or plastic material, weighing at least 400 g, with a diameter of 15 to 20 cm.
  • Tape, usually made of satin or silk, 20 feet long. The staff is usually made of fiberglass, wood, or plastic. It has a diameter of 1 cm and a length between 50 and 60 cm. Its weight is approximately 35 g.
  • Clubs, mostly made of plastic, wood or a synthetic material. With a length of 30 to 50 cm, the bottle-like devices weigh at least 150 g.
  • Hoops made of plastic or wood. They have an inner diameter of between 80 and 90 cm and a minimum weight of 300 g.

From what age can rhythmic gymnastics be practiced with equipment?

Rhythmic gymnastics with equipment conveys elegant lightness. Nevertheless, like ballet, it is a sport that places high demands on the gymnasts. Competitors in particular must have excellent fitness and athleticism. The cognitive requirements are also high. Girls often start this sport at a very young age. The performance peak in rhythmic gymnastics with equipment is reached between the ages of 15 and 22. Professional gymnasts usually end their careers on the competition floor before the age of 30.

Diverse training design: rhythmic gymnastics with equipment

In order to meet these requirements, a diverse training structure is necessary. Coordination and dexterity as well as strength and endurance training are regularly on the exercise plan. Musicality, rhythm, balance and mobility with body and hand device are also trained.
