Select® Handball PHANTOM DB

The Select® PHANTOM DB is a robust training handball, specially designed for resin-free game operations. The durable HPU-800 outer material with a textured surface ensures very good grip - without the use of resin. The 2mm thick lamination guarantees a pleasantly soft ball contact, while the dual-bonded construction provides additional stability and shape retention. Thanks to the high-quality SR bladder, the ball convinces with optimal balance and consistent bouncing behavior. The size and weight comply with the requirements for resin-free playing, making the ball ideal for training in schools and clubs.

What distinguishes resin-free balls from handballs that can be played with resin?

The IHF has revised the ball regulations regarding the size of balls with and without resin. Resin-free balls are significantly smaller and slightly lighter in all sizes. This makes the ball easier to throw and catch, even without using resin. Additionally, the surface of resin-free balls has special properties designed to improve grip. For example, the surface may be water-absorbent or feature stronger, grippier contour grooves. Some balls can also be played with lower air pressure, allowing the fingertips to sink in deeper without negatively affecting the ball’s bounce. However, the special surface texture means that using resin on these balls would significantly damage them.

Are resin-free balls meant to completely replace resin?

No. The aim is rather to offer an alternative where the use of resin is not allowed in a particular region or sports hall. More and more sports halls are banning handball resin due to heavy contamination. Furthermore, some regional associations have already agreed to completely forgo the use of resin. This means that in some amateur leagues, only resin-free handball is played, even if the sports halls would partially allow resin.

Who decides whether playing handball with resin is permitted or not?

The IHF initially only specifies that both types of handballs are permitted in official games if they meet the required size and weight standards. The final decision regarding the use of resin lies not with the IHF but with the sports hall operators. Even if the IHF permits resin, a sports hall can prohibit its use due to cleaning and maintenance requirements. Conditions and regulations therefore vary from place to place. Some regional associations have already excluded the use of resin entirely to standardise conditions across leagues.

What does Dual Bonded mean?

DB stands for Dual Bonded. It is a technology used in the manufacture of footballs. The individual panels of the ball cover are first hand-stitched together and then sealed with a special adhesive (bonding). This reduces water absorption at the seams, makes the ball more uniform for a pleasant feel, more durable, and helps it retain its round shape longer.
