Who decides whether playing handball with resin is allowed or not?

The IHF initially only specifies that both types of handballs are permitted in official games if they meet the size and weight standards. The final decision on the use of resin, therefore, does not lie with the IHF but rather with the venue operators. Even if the IHF allows the use of resin, a sports hall can prohibit it due to cleaning and maintenance requirements. Conditions and regulations thus vary from place to place. Some regional associations are already completely banning the use of resin to standardise conditions across leagues.

What distinguishes resin-free balls from handballs that can be played with resin?

The IHF has revised the ball regulations regarding the size of balls with and without resin. Resin-free balls are noticeably smaller and slightly lighter in all sizes. This allows the ball to be thrown and caught more easily without using resin. Additionally, the surface of resin-free balls has special properties designed to improve grip. For example, the surface may be water-absorbent or feature deeper, grippier contour grooves. Some balls can also be played with lower air pressure, allowing the fingertips to sink in more deeply without negatively affecting bounce behaviour. However, the special surface texture means that using resin would significantly damage the ball.

What does the abbreviation AR mean?

The abbreviation stands for "Advanced Resin-free." This means the ball offers particularly good grip without the use of resin.
